Divot Repair Guide: The 4-Step Technique Every Golfer Must Master

Proper divot and ball mark repair is essential etiquette that improves the greens for everyone. Learn the simple, **expert-recommended 4-step technique** that ensures the green heals faster and keeps your future putts rolling true. **Never lift the turf or soil!**

The Quick & Correct Way to Repair a Ball Mark (4 Steps)

Step 1: Clear Loose Debris (Clean the Area)

Gently clear any loose sand, grass, or soil from the edges of the ball mark. This prevents contamination and allows the turf to meet cleanly during repair.

Step 2: Insert Tool and Push Edges Inward

Insert the prongs of your divot tool **outside** the mark. Gently push the edge of the turf **inward** toward the center. **Crucially: Do not lift the turf!**

Step 3: Repeat the Pushing Motion

Repeat the pushing motion from all sides of the mark (front, back, left, right) until the edges are completely pushed inward and the depression is mostly gone.

Step 4: Tamp Down and Smooth the Surface

Use the flat bottom of your putter or the back of your divot tool to lightly **tap down** and smooth the repaired area until it is perfectly level with the green. **Do not stomp!**
